In December 2008, URI will host its second Global Assembly in Mayapur, West Bengal, INDIA. We are planning for 700 participants from around the globe and representing many religious and spiritual expressions to gather in India. During the summer of 2008, the global office of URI, where the fellow(s) would be working, will be deeply immersed in planning and making arrangements for the assembly. The fellows would be engaged with tracking invitations, registrations, visa applications, and other tasks that are critical to the success of the assembly.
Given the short time of the internship, it would be best if the fellow(s) has good skills with Microsoft Excel and Word. An ideal match would be someone who is well-organized and comfortable working with organizing data. A good deal of time will be spent using the computer, probably on a Windows PC, but possibly on a Mac. Though not a required skill, it would be helpful if the person(s) had some skills for creating wall charts or some sort of visual representation of our planning progress that can be updated as we approach the assembly.
URI is very grassroots in its nature—which is not always easy to do as a growing global organization! The founder and executive director work in the global office and the fellow(s) would have regular access to them, as well as the other staff. Workind directly with the project manager, the fellow(s) will gain experience with some aspects of organizing a global event. Working directly with the Global Assembly teams, the fellow(s) would also be able to connect with leaders and delegates in the URI network who are inquiring about the assembly or needing follow-up assistance with their arrangements. Also, the URI office is located in the Presidio of San Francisco, a hub of non-profit organizations focused on interfaith, environment, conflict resolution and many other important issues of our time.
