The MTSO chapter of the Be’ats was born out of a desire to bring a group focused on uniting people together who had a common bond of mission and justice onto our campus. Too often, people become so focused on the work to be done itself, they neglect the spiritual and theological aspects of it. Without investing some energy into reflecting on the work in this way it becomes difficult to grow in faith, and, as we are reminded in scripture, works without faith are meaningless. By gathering as a group, each with differing interests and callings for peace and justice, we try to offer a place of support, networking, and reflection.

I came to seminary out of the high-tech, fast paced, big dollar world of technology consulting. I achieved what many hope to have: financial security and prosperity, as well as a quickly accelerating career. I had done what everyone said you are supposed to do and bought into everything everyone said you should believe. But, in the end, I saw nothing but the cracks in that world, and I longed for something that would fill my spirit and not only my bank account. So, with the most wonderful wife and son a person could hope for, we took a leap of faith and left all that behind.

Being part of Be’ats is, to me, about realizing that there is truth and life in Christ’s calling to all people. That there are some virtues that are universal and fitting to all occasions. And that strength can be found by gathering together, in the name of God, to work for peace and justice for all of God’s creation.
