“Where Is Your Brother?”

The Cain and Abel Narrative: The Bible’s First Murder

What did Cain say to Abel? What did they fight about and who started it? Why did God have to ask what happened? Early in Genesis, we encounter revenge, murder and conspiracy. Abel shirks responsibility, God feigns ignorance and a quarter of the world’s population lies dead. Through the use of Biblical text, midrash (classical rabbinic interpretation of the Bible) and modern Biblical commentary, we’ll try to unlock the mystery behind this event – the Bible’s first death.

Rabbi Jared SaksRabbi Jared Saks is the associate rabbi at Temple Israel. He grew up in Long Valley, New Jersey, where he was active in North American Federation of Temple Youth, the national Reform youth movement. During his college years at Florida State University, Rabbi Saks was enthusiastically involved in Jewish campus life. He graduated cum laude with a double major in Religion and Spanish in 1999. He was ordained from Hebrew Union College - Jewish Institute of Religion in New York City.
