“Where Is Your Brother?”
The Cain and Abel Narrative: The Bible’s First Murder
What did Cain say to Abel? What did they fight about and who started it? Why did God have to ask what happened? Early in Genesis, we encounter revenge, murder and conspiracy. Abel shirks responsibility, God feigns ignorance and a quarter of the world’s population lies dead. Through the use of Biblical text, midrash (classical rabbinic interpretation of the Bible) and modern Biblical commentary, we’ll try to unlock the mystery behind this event – the Bible’s first death.
