Protestants for the Common Good Fellowship Description

Description of Work:

PCG engages individuals of faith in public issues. We do so through both education activities within congregations and more broadly in the public arena; and we seek through advocacy to achieve goals of systemic change affecting economic justice and the other priorities of our Common Good Agenda (see website). The particular activities assigned to an intern will depend upon the priorities being pursued at the time the intern is with us. Over this past summer, an intern analyzed the crisis currently faced by our county health care system, which serves over 1 million individuals, over 60% of whom are self-insured, 16% on Medicaid, and the 13% on Medicare. We are currently reaching out for advocacy support within county congregations to urge the county board to institute a new governance structure for the Health Services Bureau. An intern now might well be assigned particular congregations from which to enlist the support we need. Over the coming year, PCG will give priority to tax reform to support funding for education, legislation to address the affordable housing crisis in the Chicago metropolitan area, and initiatives to help ex-offenders reenter society upon leaving prison. Depending on individuals skills, an intern will prepare written materials in support of our public campaigns.

Skills Required:

Interpersonal skills (capacity to relate to clergy and others within congregations, and to PCG staff); writing skills; capacity for policy analysis.

Unique opportunities internship provides:

We are experienced in working with interns. Opportunities will include exposure to the many groups with which we work in coalition on our public initiatives; attendance at staff meetings which enables an individual to begin to see the management issues and challenges facing small and growing not-for-profits; exposure to governmental bodies at the city, county, and state levels; attendance
