Council for a Parliament of the World’s Religions (CPWR)

Description of Work:

The Council for a Parliament of the World’s Religions is an international interreligious organization fostering dialogue and cooperation between diverse religious and spiritual communities around the world, and the engagement of these communities with other guiding institutions is addressing critical issues facing the global community. Over the past ten years the Council has provide internships for a dozen seminarians in local, regional and international interreligious activities.

The Council is currently preparing to hold the 2009 Parliament of the World’s Religions event in Melbourne, Australia. This is the world’s largest interreligious gathering, with 12,000 – 15,000 persons expected. Preparation for this event over the next two years included program development (500 programs on religion, spirituality and critical issues), worldwide outreach for information and participation, leveraging the impact of the event with local interreligious initiatives in 50 partners cities around the world. A job description would be developed for the intern to be involved in an aspect of this work, with an eye to the interests of the intern and accomplishable tasks during the internship.

Skills Required:

An intern working with the Council needs to have an interest in, and comfort with, dealing with individuals, groups, organizations and communities of diverse religious and spiritual traditions. Such a person would need to be task oriented, self-directed within a defined scope of work, and able to work collaboratively with colleagues.

Unique opportunities provided by this internship:

Working as a Fellow with the Council will provide an introduction to individuals, communities, institutions and initiatives of diverse traditions and cultures. The Fellow would take part in the creative “group think” of colleagues working in the interreligious field.
