Children's Defense Fund, Oakland Fellowship Description

Description of Work:

Every October, the non-profit, non-partisan Children’s Defense Fund sponsors and more than 200 religious organizations and denominations support the interfaith National Observance of Children’s Sabbaths.

The Children’s Sabbath focuses on the needs of our nation’s children, including the 9 million children without health insurance. (To learn more about the interfaith National Observance of Children’s Sabbaths, click HERE and HERE.

The Fellow will be involved in the planning and promoting of this event to religious organizations and denominations in California, including but not limited to:

  • Steps for planning a Children’s Sabbath in one’s place of worship;
  • Spreading the word in one’s place of worship;
  • Reaching out to the community and, in collaborations with our Communications Team, media;
  • Planning and disseminating a release for local media; and
  • Depending on the religious organizations/denominations, discussing the types of resources and activities on the day of one’s event.

Skills Required:

  • past experience doing outreach;
  • excellent articulation and writing;
  • ability to take initiative;
  • ability to think creatively;
  • ability to work both collaboratively and independently;
  • a great sense of humor!

Unique opportunities include:

  • Working with faith leaders who are doing social change work on behalf of children;
  • Working with child advocates within the oldest and largest children’s advocacy organization;
    Gaining experience on outreach and communications at a statewide level;
  • Being connected to children’s health policy work at the national and statewide fronts;
  • Weekly staff meetings with CDF staff in both LA and Oakland as well as the possibility of national staff calls; and
  • Possibility of participation in children’s advocacy events in Oakland area.
